Black capped chickadee nest box excavation in full swing!
The Black capped chickadees have been really actively excavating the nest box in our backyard today. Click on the above video for an example, and follow along as they complete the cavity excavation, build a nest and raise some chicks. Stay tuned, and follow all the action on the nest box camera by clicking here.
I am overjoyed to watch your videos. Over the years, we have, from time to time, had nests in and around the yard. We have watched as often as we could all the goings on of the nests. This is spectacular to really see it all so clearly.
Hi Sage Butterfly, I could watch the little birds all day- I get such a kick out of watching them build their nests and watching the young. For years we just watched from outside the nest boxes, so it has been wonderful to actually see what happens inside now. Enjoy! David
That is neat. I have outdoor cats, so I don't put up bird feeders or put up houses; it wouldn't be kind. But I do love seeing this activity. The nest activity I see here in Bozeman is provided by the magpies, which are pulling all the coir from my hanging baskets, dang it. --Kate
Greeting fellow Montana garden blogger! It is kind of quiet right now in the chickadee box, it looks like the excavation is done, and soon they'll start nest building. Stay tuned. Maybe set out some extra coir for the magpies, so they leave you baskets alone? Good luck- enjoy spring... David
So TODAY (4/21), we finally had some major chickadee nest box excavation. Wood chips are everywhere! I'm excited. Do they leave the nest boxes in the evening? They were hard at work this morning and when we got home from work, they were nowhere to be found.
Greg- Congratulations! They won't roost in the box until they lay eggs, then female will spend cool nights on the eggs, and she'll even spend some nights on the nestlings when they are young. They'll spend a few days excavating the box, then they'll bring in material to build the nest. Enjoy! David

ReplyDeleteI love getting to see (and hear) the goings-on of my neighbors! The chickadees AND you. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Amy- right back at you. We love having you as a neighbor, and I bet the chickadees do too!
